What owners say

Based on 19 Cloudy Nights discussions

What they love

  • Collimation held stable after extended use and abuse testing with laser collimator
  • Tube showed no flex or wobble despite aggressive twisting and shaking during testing
  • Very smooth azimuth bearings with roller bearing design between metal sheets
  • Alt tension adjustable with one hand using single handle
  • Compact when retracted (~36.

What caught them off guard

  • !No light shroud included or available at time of use
  • !Light shroud design will be challenging due to three-strut configuration
  • !~1 inch gap between secondary housing and base when collapsed allows dust entry, requiring two lens caps
  • !Base remains bulky and difficult to transport despite collapsible tube
  • !Scope comparatively expensive relative to other 12-inch dobsonians like Meade LightBridge

Frequently asked

Questions from owners

Sourced from Cloudy Nights discussions.

How stable is the collimation when the tube is extended and retracted?
Users report the Flextube design maintains collimation very well despite the retractable structure. One owner subjected a 12" model to deliberate twisting and abuse, and the laser collimator dot did not move at all, indicating the struts and securing system are rigid enough for stable collimation.
How portable is the Flextube design in practice?
The OTA collapses to about 36 inches when retracted and fits across most car backseats. However, the large dobsonian base remains bulky and must ride separately; true portability is limited by the base, not the tube itself.
Does the scope require a light shroud and is one available?
Users strongly recommend a light shroud for contrast, but Sky-Watcher did not provide one at launch and none were available aftermarket at the time. Creating a custom shroud is challenging due to the three-strut design, which would require a self-supporting tubular structure.
What maintenance is needed between observing sessions?
The design leaves a ~1-inch gap between the secondary housing and base when collapsed, allowing dust ingress. Two lens caps—one for the base and one for the secondary housing—are recommended for protection, rather than the single cap typical of fixed-tube dobs.
How does the altitude tension adjustment work?
Altitude tension can be adjusted smoothly using one hand on either of the two side handles. The altitude bearings use roller bearings between metal sheets, providing smooth motion with adjustable friction.
