Sky-Watcher SkyMax 102 AZ-GTe

A compact, GoTo-equipped 102mm Maksutov built around planetary and lunar observation, with a very long focal ratio that rewards high-magnification targets but limits deep-sky field of view.

What you'll see

This scope's calling card is crisp, high-contrast planetary detail. At 130–200× on a steady night, Saturn shows its rings cleanly separated from the disc with the Cassini Division visible in good seeing; Jupiter reveals two or more cloud bands, the Great Red Spot when it's facing you, and all four Galilean moons. Mars at opposition shows a clear orange disc with hints of dark surface features and a polar ice cap. The Moon is spectacular — the long f/12.75 focal ratio delivers razor-sharp crater walls, rilles, and shadow detail along the terminator that shorter scopes struggle to match.

Deep-sky performance is more limited. The Orion Nebula's bright core and trapezium stars look good, but the narrow field of view crops much of the surrounding nebulosity. Globular clusters like M13 appear as granular, concentrated balls of light — you'll sense texture but won't resolve individual stars. Open clusters like the Pleiades overfill the field, losing the framing that makes them dramatic. The Andromeda Galaxy shows only its bright core; the outer spiral arms simply don't fit.

The GoTo mount is the great equaliser here: even if the scope's field of view is narrow, the SynScan app will put objects dead centre within seconds. For a beginner who wants to see planets at their best without learning to star-hop, this is a real advantage. Just be aware that the mount's alt-az tracking limits astrophotography to short-exposure planetary and lunar imaging — long-exposure deep-sky work is not practical.

Worth knowing before you buy

The AZ-GTe mount is adequate for the compact tube but can transmit vibrations at high magnification, especially in wind…
