Sky-Watcher SkyMax 127 AZ-GTe
A compact 127mm Maksutov-Cassegrain on a GoTo alt-az mount that delivers sharp planetary views at a beginner-friendly price point.

What you'll see
This scope's defining strength is planetary detail. At 127mm aperture and 1500mm focal length (f/11.8), the Maksutov design delivers high-contrast, sharp views of the Moon, Saturn, and Jupiter that rival much larger telescopes in steadier seeing. Expect to see lunar craters down to about 2–3km resolution, Saturn's rings with the Cassini Division visible on good nights, Jupiter's cloud belts with hints of festoons, and the Great Red Spot when it's well-placed. Mars at opposition will show the polar ice cap and dark surface markings.
On deep sky objects, the long focal length and modest aperture set limits. The Orion Nebula's bright core and trapezium stars are well shown, but the surrounding nebulosity is cropped by the narrow field. Globular clusters like M13 appear granular with hints of resolution at the edges. The Andromeda Galaxy's core is visible, but its full extent is far wider than the field of view. Faint galaxies will appear as dim smudges — you'll detect them with the GoTo pointing you to the right spot, but don't expect structural detail.
The AZ-GTe GoTo mount is a genuine asset for beginners. After a straightforward alignment, the handset or Wi-Fi app will slew to thousands of objects, removing the steep learning curve of star-hopping with such a narrow field of view. Tracking keeps objects centred for sustained observation, which is particularly rewarding at the high magnifications this scope favours.
